Finding Your Craft and Owning It: Joshua Walker’s CDL Journey
Marketing, according to Joshua Walker, has never been just about the deliverables. For him, it’s about the work itself—the experimentation, problem-solving, and creativity that go into each project. Whether he’s working on surf videos, narrative documentaries, or building a newsletter strategy, Josh’s approach is rooted in curiosity, creativity, and a genuine love for the craft, a mindset that has guided his journey through Clear Digital Labs (CDL), where he’s grown from apprentice to confident, well-rounded marketer with a clear vision for what comes next.

From Creative Roots to Marketing Growth
Josh describes himself first and foremost as a freelance creative. Before diving into other areas of marketing, he was already collaborating with clients on visual storytelling projects, from sun-drenched surf edits to full-length documentaries. His creative talent gave him an early edge in the industry and laid a strong foundation, while CDL provided structure, exposure, and the chance to expand beyond his comfort zone.
After discovering CDL on LinkedIn, he was drawn to the autonomy and flexibility the program offered. “It’s a freelancer’s dream contract,” he says. The combination of independence and a collaborative environment became central to his CDL journey.
Practice in Progress
Josh’s time in the CDL Specialist program gave him the chance to learn new concepts while applying them immediately. This hands-on approach has made a big difference in building both his skills and confidence.
“Practice makes perfect,” he says simply.
During the program, Josh continually tackled new challenges, worked alongside experienced professionals, and refined his skills. One of his most unexpected areas of growth? Newsletter marketing.
Coming from a background focused on photography and video production, Josh hadn’t initially considered email as a creative outlet. Over the past two quarters, he’s approached it in a whole new way, learning the nuances of audience engagement, content strategy, and performance optimization, while still keeping it creative.
“It’s been so refreshing,” he shares. His willingness to explore unfamiliar territory and find excitement in it is a recurring theme in his journey.
Building Confidence, Leadership, and Impact
As Josh progressed through his apprenticeship and into a long-term contract role, his responsibilities and confidence grew in tandem. He’s sharpened his technical skills as well as his leadership and communication abilities, applying them both within CDL and across his freelance work.
Looking back, Josh feels a mix of pride and humility. His recent promotion validates his efforts but also motivates him to keep learning and growing.
“It proves learning and practice reaps results,” he says. And he’s far from done; he continues to evolve, experiment, and raise the bar for himself.
Creativity Meets Community
One of Josh’s favorite projects to date captures exactly where his creativity and marketing skills intersect. As Creative Director for his favorite store, he helped launch its “Cut & Sew” line. Seeing his vision unfold in a brand he loves brought the project to life in a way he’d never experienced before. It’s inspired him to chase projects that feel meaningful, enjoyable, and uniquely his own.
He also finds inspiration in the simple, intentional moments, scrolling Pinterest for creative sparks or starting his day with a cup of coffee. But more than anything, he’s guided by a piece of advice from a former professor that’s stayed with him:
“Find what you love and master it.”
It’s a philosophy he puts into practice every day: simple in theory but not always easy, and one that resonates far beyond his own journey.
Looking Ahead: Scaling Impact and Staying True to the Craft
Josh’s goals are ambitious yet grounded. He’s focused on scaling CDL’s business efforts, bringing in more clients, and continuing to highlight the team’s talent. At the same time, he’s staying true to what matters most by creating freely and meaningfully.
In five years, he hopes to still be doing exactly that—working alongside friends, building things he cares about, and pushing his creative boundaries.
The future looks bright for Josh.
Advice for the Next Generation
For those just starting out in CDL or marketing, Josh isn’t afraid to tell it like it is:
“Be proactive. This is your career, not someone else’s.”
He’s right; you can’t expect growth to happen if you’re not actively participating. Progress comes step by step—through initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to try, with a few tears along the way.
Josh’s CDL story reads like a collection of field notes, capturing a period defined by real-world experience, reflection, and conversations that have reshaped his understanding of marketing. As he continues writing the next chapters, one thing is clear: he’s in control of his career and he’s shaping it on his own terms.
